India lost World Cup because match was on Indira Gandhi’s birthday: Himanta Sarma

On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed India\’s loss in the Cricket World Cup final against Australia to the coincidence that the match took place on the birthday of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

\”We had emerged victorious in all the preceding games but faced defeat in the finals. Upon investigating the reasons for our loss, I discovered that the World Cup final coincided with Indira Gandhi\’s birthday. It was played on her birthday, and unfortunately, the country did not succeed,\” he stated.

Taking a swipe at the Gandhi family, the BJP Chief Minister added, \”I have a request for BCCI. Please ensure that India does not play on the birthdays of Gandhi family members. I have learned this from the World Cup final.\”

The political dimension of India\’s loss in the ICC Menโ€™s Cricket World Cup, which occurred on February 19, escalated when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a \’panauti\’ (bad luck) and alleged that Modi\’s presence at the stadium caused India\’s defeat.

PM Modi, accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and others, attended the finals at the Ahmedabad stadium named after him. The term \’panauti\’ gained popularity on the internet following India\’s loss.

On Wednesday, the BJP lodged a complaint against Rahul Gandhi with the Election Commission regarding the remarks he made during a poll rally in Rajasthan.

Australia secured a six-wicket victory over India to claim the ICC Men\’s Cricket World Cup on Sunday. India had previously won 10 consecutive matches before the setback in the 2023 World Cup final.
