President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the INS Vindhyagiri, an advanced stealth frigate, at the premises of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) situated on the banks of the River Hooghly in Kolkata on Thursday.

Characterized by upgraded stealth capabilities, advanced weaponry, sensors, and platform management systems, Project 17A Frigates represent an evolution from the Project 17 (Shivalik Class) Frigates.

Officials from the Defence Ministry underscore the launch\’s importance in bolstering India\’s defense manufacturing sector. It aids in diminishing reliance on foreign suppliers, fostering self-sufficiency, and strengthening the national defense industrial infrastructure.

INS Vindhyagiri signifies the third and final stealth frigate commissioned by the Kolkata-based shipbuilder for the Navy within this project. Outfitted with cutting-edge technology, the vessel will undergo exhaustive trials before being handed over to the Indian Navy for operational deployment.

Over 75% of Project 17 A orders have been entrusted to domestic firms, including MSMEs and ancillary industries. This strategic decision aligns with the vision of \’AatmaNirbhar Bharat\’ (self-reliant India) as envisioned by the Narendra Modi-led government.

During the ceremony, President Droupadi Murmu stressed the importance of INS Vindhyagiri. She expressed hope that as the ship touches the waters of the Hooghly, it draws strength from the very mountains it is named after, sailing resolutely with unwavering determination while upholding cherished values.
