New Delhi: During his Friday visit to Athens, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was bestowed with the Grand Cross of the Order of Honour by Greek President Katerina N. Sakellaropoulou, according to an announcement from the prime minister\’s office.
The Grand Cross of the Order of Honour is conferred by the Greek president upon prime ministers and \”distinguished personalities who, due to their notable positions, have contributed to enhancing Greece\’s reputation.\”
Expressing his appreciation, PM Modi conveyed his gratitude to the people and administration of Greece for their manifestation of \”the deep respect that the Greek populace holds for India.\”
In a tweet, he stated, \”I extend my heartfelt gratitude to President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Greek Government, and the citizens of Greece for conferring upon me The Grand Cross of the Order of Honour. This gesture underscores the esteem with which the Greek people regard India.\”
The citation accompanying the conferred honor on PM Modi read, \”Through Prime Minister Narendra Modi, an honor is extended to the amicable nation of India.\”
Further expounding, the citation articulated, \”In the course of this visit, the Greek nation acknowledges the Prime Minister of India—a statesman who has energetically championed his nation\’s global influence and has steadfastly worked towards propelling India\’s economic progress and prosperity through audacious reforms. A leader who has accorded precedence to ecological preservation and addressing climate change as paramount concerns in international endeavors.\”
The Order of Honour was instituted in 1975.
As part of his official one-day sojourn in Greece, PM Modi arrived in Athens from South Africa on Friday. During his time in South Africa, he participated in the 15th BRICS Summit and engaged in bilateral discussions with numerous international leaders, further solidifying India\’s affiliations with these nations.
