Vakkom Purushothaman, a senior Congress leader and former Kerala speaker, passed away today at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 95.
Throughout his political career, the veteran leader achieved several milestones. He was elected five times to the Kerala Assembly from the Attingal Assembly constituency and held ministerial positions three times. Notably, he served as the longest-serving Speaker of the Kerala assembly, first from 1982 to 1984 and then from 2001 to 2004.
In addition to his contributions at the state level, Purushothaman was also elected twice to the Lok Sabha from the Alappuzha constituency and served as a Member of Parliament from 1984 to 1991.
Beyond his legislative roles, Purushothaman held significant administrative positions. He served as the 6th Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 1993 to 1996, later becoming the Governor of Mizoram from 2011 to 2014. Additionally, he briefly held the position of Governor of Tripura for two months in 2014.
His demise marks the end of an illustrious political career that spanned various responsibilities at both state and central levels.
