On Wednesday, September 6th, the Macau Olympic Complex Stadium will be the venue for a friendly match between Macau and Bhutan.
Both teams find themselves in similar form, each having secured just one victory in their past 10 matches. This meeting between Macau and Bhutan is their first-ever encounter, as a previously scheduled friendly in November 2018 was canceled at the last minute.
Macau comes into this fixture on the back of three consecutive defeats. The Verdes will use this match as a part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers – AFC first round. They are scheduled to face Myanmar in back-to-back matches next month and will also engage in a second friendly against Cambodia on September 11, all in preparation for the qualifiers. Macau is eagerly seeking their first home victory since 2019.
On the other hand, Bhutan\’s last triumph also dates back to 2019, with their most notable result since then being a 1-1 draw against Nepal earlier this year. The visitors are also laying the groundwork for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification – AFC first round, with a two-legged tie against Hong Kong slated for October 12th and 17th.
In June of the previous year, the Dragon Boys participated in the South Asian Football Federation Championship, where they faced three defeats against Bangladesh, Lebanon, and Maldives. Despite these setbacks, they approach the historic clash with Macau with optimism. However, their recent away record has been less than favorable, with only one draw and nine losses in their last 10 away games.
