In a disturbing case of medical neglect, a doctor at a government-operated local health center in Mauda tehsil, Nagpur, Maharashtra, left family planning surgeries unfinished last week when his request for a cup of tea was ignored, as reported by Moneycontrol.
On November 3, eight women were scheduled for vasectomy procedures. After conducting surgery on four of them and administering anesthesia to the remaining four patients, Dr. Tejrang Bhalavi, the accused doctor, asked the hospital staff for a cup of tea. However, when his request was disregarded, he unexpectedly departed from the operating room without completing the remaining family planning surgeries.
The hospital administration promptly notified the district medical officer about Dr. Bhalavi\’s sudden departure, leaving the other female patients without completing their procedures. In response, the district medical officer dispatched another doctor to carry out the remaining surgeries on the patients who had already been administered anesthesia.
Subsequent to the revelation of this incident, the Nagpur district administration launched an investigation.
Soumya Sharma, CEO of Nagpur Zilla Parishad, informed NDTV that she has established a three-member committee to conduct an inquiry into the matter. She also stated that appropriate measures would be taken against the doctor in question once the committee submits its report.
Regarding the incident, Sharma shared her insights with NDTV over the phone, stating, \”On Friday, November 3, a family planning operation was organized at the government hospital in Mauda tehsil. Dr. Tejrang Bhalavi from RH Government Hospital in Ramtek tehsil was brought in to perform the surgeries. He completed four procedures and abandoned the remaining four. This information was relayed to me by a member of the Panchayat Samiti.\”
She further emphasized, \”I immediately contacted the health officer of Nagpur Zilla Parishad and requested him to send doctors to complete the pending surgeries. I was informed that he left the operation due to not receiving his tea. I have initiated a prompt investigation, forming a three-member committee for this purpose. Appropriate actions will be taken once the report is submitted. This is an extremely serious matter, and if doctors are neglecting their duties over a cup of tea, legal actions will be taken under IPC Section 304.\”
