Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) | UPSC
The Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, aims to enhance urban living standards by improving water supply, sewerage networks, and public transport infrastructure in cities across India.
Launched in 2015, AMRUT focuses on providing basic urban amenities such as water and sewerage to households, and building amenities in cities that will improve the quality of life for all, especially the poor and the disadvantaged.
The AMRUT initiative, part of India's urban renewal strategy, mandates a systematic approach to ensure green spaces and well-maintained parks to enhance the aesthetic value of urban areas and promote healthy living among urban dwellers.
AMRUT's primary objective is to ensure every household has access to a tap with assured water supply and a sewerage connection, directly impacting the urban population's health and hygiene by mitigating waterborne diseases and pollution.
Administered by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, AMRUT also emphasizes the importance of urban planning reforms, including the development of GIS-based master plans to promote sustainable and efficient urban growth in Indian cities.
