SC gives ‘final opportunity’ to Maharashtra Speaker to give ‘realistic’ timeline to decide disqualification pleas

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, leading the Supreme Court bench, granted a ‘last chance’ to Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Rahul Narwekar, on Tuesday, to provide a ‘practical schedule’ for the resolution of disqualification petitions arising from the Shiv Sena split.

The bench also made remarks regarding interviews in which Narwekar claimed that the Speaker’s office holds a ‘co-equal’ status. Additionally, the bench noted that, when acting as the ‘tribunal’ overseeing disqualification proceedings, the Speaker is subject to the jurisdiction of the highest court.
