Subrata Roy, the pioneering founder of the Sahara Group, passed away in Mumbai at the age of 75 after a prolonged illness. His health decline led to his admission to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute on a Sunday.
Expressing profound sorrow, Sahara India Pariwar released a statement, saying, “With deep sadness, Sahara India Pariwar announces the passing of our respected \’Saharasri\’ Subrata Roy Sahara. Saharasri ji, an inspiring leader, breathed his last on November 14, 2023, at 10:30 pm, succumbing to cardiorespiratory arrest after a prolonged struggle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.”
Born on June 10, 1948, in Bihar\’s Araria, Subrata Roy established an extensive business empire across finance, real estate, media, and hospitality.
Having earned a mechanical engineering degree from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur, he initiated his business journey in Gorakhpur before assuming control of Sahara Finance in 1976. By 1978, he transformed it into Sahara India Pariwar, emerging as one of India\’s largest conglomerates. The Sahara group introduced Rashtriya Sahara, a Hindi language newspaper, in 1992, and later expanded into television with Sahara TV, subsequently renamed Sahara One.
The group expressed their grief, stating, “The loss of Saharasri ji will be keenly felt by the entire Sahara India Pariwar. He was a guiding force, a mentor, and a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege to work alongside him.”
In 2014, the Supreme Court of India mandated Subrata Roy\’s detention for non-appearance in connection with a dispute with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). This triggered a prolonged legal battle, resulting in his confinement in Tihar Jail. Ultimately, he was granted parole.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav conveyed condolences on X (formerly Twitter), stating, \”The passing of Subrata Roy ji is a heartfelt loss for Uttar Pradesh and the country. In addition to being a highly successful businessman, he was a compassionate individual with a generous heart who assisted numerous people and became their pillar of support.\”
