The Government Railway Police (GRP) has formally submitted a comprehensive chargesheet in the case involving RPF constable Chetan Singh Chaudhary, who, on July 31, used his service weapon to fatally shoot four individuals, including a senior officer, aboard the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express. This extensive chargesheet, consisting of over 1,000 pages, has been filed in a local court situated in the suburbs of Mumbai. It affirms that Chaudhary is mentally sound and was fully aware of his actions. The GRP\’s conclusion is underpinned by the testimonies of over 150 witnesses.
GRP officers have taken the statements of three of these witnesses before the Borivali Metropolitan Magistrate court under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
In addition to the accounts provided by witnesses, the investigative team has drawn upon the CCTV footage from within the train. This footage clearly depicts Chetan Singh moving between compartments, appearing to be on the lookout for potential victims.
The tragic incident unfolded when Chetan Singh, an RPF jawan, discharged his firearm on the Mumbai-Jaipur Superfast Express shortly after it passed Palghar Station in Maharashtra, resulting in the tragic loss of life for four railway passengers, including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Railway Protection Force.
Sumit Thakur, the Chief PRO of Western Railway, commented on the incident earlier, expressing that a police constable shot his colleague ASI Tika Ram without a clearly established motive. Tragically, three civilians also lost their lives in the incident. Chetan Kumar was taken into custody by the RPF/Bhayandar.
RPF officials revealed that this tragic event transpired within the confines of the B5 coach of the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express (Train number 12956).
In an official statement, the RPF confirmed that the incident took place at 5:23 on July 31, 2023, when train number 12956 had reached BVI. During this episode, Chetan Singh, who was on escort duty, discharged his weapon on ASI Tika Ram, leading to casualties among RPF personnel and civilians.
To conduct a thorough investigation into the Mumbai train firing incident, a high-level committee has been established, presided over by the Additional Director General of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), as announced by Western Railway.
