New Dress Code For Parliament Staff Kicks Off Row

The first session within the new Parliament building is scheduled for September 18, marking a momentous occasion. While the precise agenda for this special session remains undisclosed, it has been confirmed that regular parliamentary activities will commence at the new venue on September 19, coinciding with Ganesh Chaturthi.

In addition to the renovated edifice, notable changes are also evident in the attire of Parliament personnel. The fresh uniforms have been meticulously crafted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). It is noteworthy that this transition to new uniforms was originally planned for the preceding parliamentary session but encountered delays for unspecified reasons.

The conventional gala suits worn by bureaucrats will be replaced by vibrant magenta or deep pink Nehru jackets, coupled with shirts adorned with intricate lotus flower patterns, all harmonized with khaki-colored trousers.

Conversely, female staff members will continue to don saree uniforms, preserving the status quo.

Furthermore, the marshals of both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha will adopt Manipuri turbans as part of the uniform overhaul. The security personnel within the building, previously attired in safari suits, will now be outfitted in camouflage attire reminiscent of military garb.

Nevertheless, controversy has arisen over the utilization of the lotus motif, which also serves as the election symbol of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In opposition to this choice, Congress\’ Manickam Tagore has proposed alternative national symbols such as the peacock or tiger. Notably, previous controversies involving the lotus theme in the Rajya Sabha have been contentious.

The new Parliament building, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May of this year, symbolizes India\’s journey towards self-reliance, as epitomized by \”Aatmanirbhar Bharat.\” During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi hailed the building as a testament to India\’s aspirations for development.

The new Parliament facility has been thoughtfully designed with future needs in mind. It possesses the capacity to accommodate gatherings of 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha. Moreover, joint sessions of both houses will be convened in the Lok Sabha Chamber, enhancing the efficiency and functionality of India\’s parliamentary proceedings.
