Apologise in 15 days, says Bihar Congress leader in legal notice to DMK’s Maran

On Monday, Chandrika Yadav, a leader of the Bihar Congress, declared that he has served a legal notice to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Dayanidhi Maran over his alleged remarks insinuating that individuals exclusively studying Hindi in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh engage in building houses and cleaning toilets in Tamil Nadu. Yadav affirmed that if Maran fails to apologize within 15 days, legal action will be pursued.

Yadav, a former legislator, clarified that he initiated this legal action in his individual capacity and not as a representative of the Bihar Congress. He expressed his belief that Maran\’s statement was an insult to the self-esteem and pride of Biharis and their substantial contributions to the progress of various states.

Chandrika Yadav\’s announcement comes subsequent to the criticism of DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran\’s comments by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav. In a viral video reportedly from 2019, Maran is heard drawing parallels between the employment prospects of those solely versed in Hindi and those proficient in English.

Highlighting that Maran\’s perspective does not accurately represent the achievements of Biharis, Yadav underscored that many hold esteemed positions in bureaucracy and various professions in southern states. He cited instances, including a Bihari serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Tamil Nadu.

Yadav mentioned his track record of lodging complaints against individuals for offensive statements, referring to the case of former Jehanabad MP Arun Kumar, convicted in 2022 based on a complaint filed by Yadav in 2015.

While the DMK clarified that Maran\’s statement was from a 2019 video and has been misinterpreted, Chandrika Yadav remains resolute in his stance, asserting that the comment undermines the contributions of Biharis. He intends to file a complaint in a Jehanabad court once it reopens after the winter vacation.
