Ashwin\’s \’GOAT\’ reaction after Nathan Lyon joins illustrious 500-wicket club in Australia\’s Perth win vs Pakistan

Nathan Lyon Recognizes Ashwin\’s Influence as He Enters the 500-Wicket Club in Perth Test

In the Perth Test of the Pakistan series opener, Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon, with a tally of 496 wickets, conveyed his appreciation for the impact of Indian cricket legend Ravichandran Ashwin on his career. Lyon lauded Ashwin as \”one of my primary mentors,\” and their heartwarming interaction on social media gained widespread attention. Responding to Lyon\’s acknowledgment, Ashwin later expressed his admiration with a \’GOAT\’ reaction as Lyon achieved the prestigious milestone of 500 wickets.

Earlier in the year, Lyon appeared on track to reach the 500-wicket mark, but a calf injury during the Ashes series interrupted his journey. This setback marked Lyon\’s first-ever injury in his 12-year career. Nevertheless, Lyon promptly advanced to 499 wickets by dismissing Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, and Aamer Jamal in the first innings against Pakistan at the Optus Stadium, where he boasts an impressive record. Lyon reached the coveted 500-wicket milestone on the fourth day by dismissing Faheem Ashraf, following a successful lbw review, amid concerns that he might be stuck at 499 wickets.

Lyon now holds the distinction of being the eighth bowler in Test history and the third Australian, following Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563), to achieve the 500-wicket milestone. Additionally, he joins the elite group of spinners that includes Muthiah Muralidaran and Anil Kumble.

After Lyon\’s remarkable achievement, Ashwin took to social media to applaud him as a \’GOAT,\’ posting, “8th bowler and only the 2nd off-spinner in history to pick 500 test wickets. @NathLyon421 congrats mate #AUSvsPAK.”

Reflecting on this milestone, Lyon expressed pride in overcoming his Ashes injury setback and reaching this significant achievement. He characterized the landmark wicket as a \”distinctive trademark\” – dismissing a left-hander by sliding the ball onto the pad. Lyon acknowledged initial concerns about the height but was reassured when the fielders confirmed it was three reds.

As for Ashwin, currently boasting 489 wickets, he stands next on the wicket-taking list ahead of India\’s two-Test series in South Africa, followed by a five-match series at home against England starting in late January.
